While there are many arguments in the human resources field about resumes, they remain today the most common denominator in the process of screening job applicants. The form resumes take may vary, from the traditional resume or curriculum vita, to the electronic resume used by online job services, to the multimedia website or compact disc, the significant elements of all are essentially the same. The keys discussed in this article apply equally well to all models.
The screener that will review your resume will be looking for some key points. If you are to successful in getting the interview for the position you want, you need to know what the screener will be looking for and respond to his or her needs.
Key 1: Use Action Terminology. An applicant's resume should be action oriented. Avoid terminology such as "I was assigned to..." or "My job responsibilities included..." Instead, use action verbs at the start of bullet points under each job or skill area. Consider ideas such as "Initiated a project which saved a client Rs. 200,000 annually" or "Streamlined a complex process for a client which resulted in saving six steps and in decreasing customer response time by 20%." Terms such as developed, managed, and implemented are good terms to use to help screeners understand your successful track record.
Key 2: Write Concisely. Avoid being too wordy in your resume. Use short sentences and bullet points. Long paragraphs of text may work well in writing for publication, but will cause a screener to get lost.
Key 3: Allow for White Space. Leave lots of white space in your resume. Screeners often make notations in the margins, and if you fill the paper edge to edge, these marginal notations will be awkward. Additionally, good use of white space can make a resume look balanced and professional. Even if your resume is on the Internet, create the webpage so that it allows white space when printed.
Key 4: Keep the Typefaces Simple. Using more than one or two typefaces may look interesting and unique, but they tend to distract from the content of the resume. You may want to use bold and italic types for emphasis, but avoid mixing too many at a time. Be very selective.
Key 5: Explain Time Gaps. Gaps between jobs are not as critical as they once were, given our rapidly changing economy. Resume reviewers even anticipate some gaps. But explain what you did during the gap. If you did some freelance work, highlight your accomplishments. If you are silent about the gap, the screener will often assume the worst, not the best. Frame the gap in the best way possible.
Key 6: Customize. With the wide availability of word processors and HTML programs, there is no reason not to customize a resume. Research what the potential employer wants and needs, and then target your resume to those needs. Use a carefully customized cover letter as well to make the application very relevant to the employer's needs and desires.
Key 7: Be Honest. In our high-tech world of business, it is becoming less expensive and easier to verify information on a resume. Never list a degree you didn't earn or embellish your accomplishments. Make certain that if an employer checks the facts on your resume, he will not find anything questionable. If a team accomplished a project, say that you were part of that team, not that you did it on your own. Nothing will sink an applicant faster than something untrue on a resume.
Following these seven keys to successful resumes, whether they are high-tech or decidedly low-tech, will open doors to opportunities to find that all-important job.

Last Thursday, the 6th e-Commerce Convention in Paris ended. PrestaShop got very positive results from this event: a successful conference with Patrice Cassard (Archiduchesse.com) and Xavier Poitau (Axome partner agency), and nearly 400 contacts encountered throughout the event.
After 3 days full in meetings, we participated in the Open Innovation Awards, where we presented PrestaShop face to a worldwide Open-Source followers audience.
Alongside the Awards, our Gold partner Profileo highlighted our e-commerce solution during the Open Days. Thanks to them!
Several new bugs have been fixed in the SVN version this week, including:
Since the beginning, PrestaShop has been designed to be an international solution. Our community is the proof that this challenge has been won. :-)
But we, at PrestaShop, are intent on offering a tool that suits as much as possible with everyone's business in the whole world.
This implies in particular for the e-seller to be able to configure his shop in respect of the taxes and laws in effect.
For this reason, we opened a new forum inviting anybody to come and post all the taxes and laws specificities concerning e-commerce in general, or even more specially his own business, in his country.
This will constitute a good way for each community's member to contribute to the development of a promising tool that he will be able to make the most of.
Besides, two new moderators have been nominated, one for the Turkish section, one for the Russian section.

This week, in the heart of the e-Commerce Convention 2009, the actuality is very rich, and our agenda, filled ;-)
On the menu of this newsletter, a report of the first two days at the e-Commerce Convention, the announce of the Open Days, an update about the developments, the news of the community forum, an e-shop using PrestaShop highlighted, and news of PrestaStore, this week : additional features for your front office.
Today was the last day to meet us on our stand at the e-Commerce Convention 2009, at Porte de Versailles in Paris. After two intense days of meetings and presentations, the last day of the exhibition also looked very promising.
Yesterday, facing a large audience, Patrice Cassard, founder of Archiduchesse.com, and Xavier Poitau from Axome agency, which has produced the website, explained their experience, alongside Bruno Lévêque and Igor Schlumberger at the conference "Design and launch your e-commerce website: Discovery of the Open-Source e-commerce software PrestaShop".
They discussed the flexibility to customize and to use our software and the very recent partnership between Axome and PrestaShop.

Our Gold partner Profileo will represent PrestaShop during the Open Days, taking place from today. Tomorrow, Xavier Bonnaud and Tristan Jacques will intervene for a presentation of PrestaShop, by the functional and technical aspects.
Workshops will also be organized, animated by Profileo, to discover our solution in action.
More about the Open Days and Profileo No release this week, but several corrections were done on the SVN version of PrestaShop. Among the modifications, the correction of the bug encountered on volume discounts when combining multiple versions of products. We have also fixed a problem with taxes, which occurred after the removal of one of them. Finally, changes have been made on sending mail via SMTP, and PaypalAPI.
We invite you to visit the SVN to know all the bugs fixed. PrestaShop 1.2.4 is always available ;-)
Download PrestaShop 1.2.4 As promised last week, a wave of moderators' recruitment has been realized. First, moderators already in place but inactive have been contacted and removed if necessary. Next, calls have been done in every forum without moderators. Answers were not long to arrive, with interesting candidates and a balanced distribution, which has made selection far easier.
There are now 31 moderators assigned to the different community forums. Thanks to them all! Only the Polish and Lithuanian forums actually remain without any moderator due to the lack of volunteers. A word to the wise! ;-)
If you consider that some forums are understaffed concerning the moderators, please don't hesitate to let us know.
